Located in South Delhi the four-story corner house has a stilt parking and basement feature with an art gallery, music studio and an office. The clients approached us with a distinctive brief for their house which was to accommodate multiple generations of a growing family that wanted a unified living experience, with their individual spaces that reflected their uniqueness and integrated work, living spaces. The Chandra’s are an artistic family with Mrs. Shruti Chandra an accomplished contemporary artist as well as a trained Kathak dancer and their son a music composer. The entire family’s artistic and aesthetic sensibility is reflected in their design brief and throughout their house.
The Chandra residence strategically optimizes all of the area permissible by local code but redistributes it amongst the various floor levels.
The balconies have screens that provide shelter from the sun, create different light patterns throughout the day and the double glazed windows mitigate traffic noise from the busy arterial road. A series of experiences are created in this house that facilitates natural ventilation and uninterrupted views.
The 3rd, 4th, and terrace are duplex floors that recede from the common areas to private, housing multiple bedrooms with markedly varying characteristics. The terrace with a pergola feature is the recreational space to be used to entertain and rejuvenate, with a view of the urban landscape.
