The Battalion Headquarters is envisaged as a crown jewel for the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in the strategically important region of Ladakh. The master plan evolves out of the Buddhist symbol of the Dharma Chakra. It is an universal symbol of Buddhism, with the eight spokes representing the Buddha’s eightfold path. The wheel of law also represents the mandala and chakra, forming the basis of planning. The challenging project is sited in an extreme climatic zone with temperatures reaching -40 °C in winters coupled with harsh winds.

Sustainability forms the foundation of the design exploration with extensive energy simulation and use of materials like cavity walls, solar heating and power generation to build a comfortable, habitable space. Our design adheres to the principles of high technology and at the same time, is informed by the profound regard for tradition.
